  • San Francisco Fire, Cal Fire team up to help Camp Fire victims
    Updated On: Jan 06, 2020

While the victims of the Camp Fire are still trying to rebuild their lives, Cal Fire has teamed up with the San Francisco Fire Department to help make the process a little easier during the holidays.

At the San Francisco Toy Headquarters Friday morning, firefighters gathered toys for the 315 students at Ponderosa Elementary School who were displaced by the Camp Fire.

"We're going to deliver a van full of toys up there to make the holiday season a little brighter for all the kids that are living in shelters right now,” said Tom O'Connor, president of the San Francisco firefighters union.

The holiday season can be tough for some people, but it's especially difficult for the victims of the Camp Fire.

San Francisco firefighters and Cal Fire are well aware of this, so they're making sure to them bring smiles.

"Every time there's a disaster somewhere in the country, we try to send toys out there,”  said Jill Peeler, event coordinator for the San Francisco firefighter’s toy program. “It's our way of giving back, not only to San Francisco, but as America as a whole to say thank you for all they do for us.”

Since being forced out of their homes, the students have been going to school at Durham Elementary in Durham -- and that's where the firefighters are going to drop off the toys.

What's even more exciting for the students is that they have no idea they'll be meeting the firefighters once school gets out.

"After school, one of our firefighters, Kurt Forbes, he is going to play Santa, so when they come out of school, he'll be there with all the gifts," said O'Connor.
